I recently bought an el cheapo B&W enlarger recently, so I've been playing around with developing my own prints from B&W film, which is more fun than, well... uh, digital. Unfortunately, I can't post the actual prints to DA, and my old Umax 610P had seen better days, so it was time for a new scanner.
I ended up with an Epson 3170 Photo, which arrived just two hours ago. Its a great scanner, but I've learned that transparency scanning from a flatbed is mediocre at best.
Here're the first two scans I did, from old Kodachrome slides:
Slide 1
Slide 2
Full-view to get the full mediocrity.
The first was pretty cruddy. The second was almost acceptable, so I tried what I knew to be a top quality slide:
Slide 3
Okay, good enough, I guess. I'll have to go shoot a roll of Ektachrome, Velvia, or one of the other modern slide films.
Now, on to the real reason I bought this thing--B&W film. The result of my test is that I'm throwing out all of my Fuji film (except Velvia). The low price just isn't worth these kind of results:
Fuji 1
Fuji 2
Compared to Ilford Delta 400:
Ilford 1
Ilford 2
